Blind
Netherlands, 2007, 96 minutes, historical drama
Director: Tamar van den Dop
Dutch with English subtitles.
Set in the late 19th century at a palatial country estate, Blind is the touching
love story of an albino woman who is ostracized by society and a young blind
man whom she is hired to read to. Ruben is a young man struggling with his
blindness, Marie is a woman who has never known love — rejected because
of her unusual looks. As winter rolls in, the film’s landscape softens
and a romantic bond develops between the two. If he could see, would love still
be blind? Beautifully shot in soft light against a snowy landscape. A tender,
anguished love story, brilliantly acted and tenderly wrought.
Won awards at
both the Giffoni Film Festival and the Nederlands Film Festival.
