Education
UK 2009, 95 minutes, drama
Director: Lone Scherfig
Script by Lynn Barber & British author Nick Hornby
A coming-of-age story about teenage Jenny (Carey Mulligan) in 1960s suburban
London. Her parents are determined their daughter will have an Oxford education
and a better life than they had, but Jenny’s life changes with the arrival
of David (Peter Sarsgaard), a playboy nearly twice her age. Envisioning the lifestyle
David can provide, Jenny goes from being a bright, diligent student to questioning
her own values and parental pressure for Oxford academia. Emma Thompson stars
as the school’s starchy headmistress and Alfred Molina, as Jenny’s
father, brilliantly portrays what a greedy parent will do to relieve financial
pressures.
“Mulligan exudes a sparkler-like intellectual charm that never quite manages
to hide the confused teenager within.” (Chris Barsanti – New
York Film Critics On-line)
Won the Audience Choice award and Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance
Film Festival.
