The
Class
(Entre Les Murs)
France, 2008, 128 min, drama
Director: Laurent Cantet

Based on 2006 novel by author and former teacher François Bégaudeau
who plays a version of himself, this film lets us be "flies on the wall" in
an inner-city lycee classroom in Sarkozy's France, over an academic year. Without
judging, it simply shows us what happens when university-trained teachers meet
street-wise, largely immigrant high school kids who don't see the relevance of
being there. No-holds-barred, emotionally charged footage of rarely
seen teacher-student interaction. This film received the Palme d'Or at the
2008 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.
