Cherry
Blossoms: Hamami
Germany/France, 2008. 124 min
Director: Doris
Doerrie
Based on Yasujiro Ozo’s 1953 masterpiece, Tokyo Story, this
is a tender, emotionally intense and profoundly moving story of marital love.
Trudi (Hannelore Elsner) and Rudi (Elmar Wepper) are an affectionate, long-married
couple whose children have grown up and moved away. When Trudi learns that her
husband is terminally ill, she keeps it from him, and urges him to see more of
life and visit their son who lives in Japan. This beautiful film culminates in
a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji in the midst of the cherry blossom festival, a celebration
of beauty, impermanence and new beginnings.
