Imagine
the Sound
Canada, 1981, 90 min, colour, documentary
Director: Ron Mann
...may be the best documentary on free jazz that we have....
Called the "THE jazz film" by The Globe and Mail and compared
to The Last Waltz, Imagine the Sound is an exuberant profile
of four legendary figures associated with the jazz avant-garde of the sixties--Cecil
Taylor, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon and Paul Bley.
The film features interviews and singular, dramatic performances by pianists
Cecil Taylor and Paul Bley, tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, and trumpet player
Bill Dixon.
Alongside the dynamic performances, the film captures the diverse history and
politicized roots of this unique musical genre. Imagine the Sound is
an important chapter in the history of the jazz documentary.
