Festival Guests: Kay Armatage

 

Kay Armatage is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to Cinema Studies, Innis College and The Institute of Women's Studies and Gender Studies. She is a member of the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama.

Author of The Girl from God's Country: Nell Shipman and the Silent Cinema (University of Toronto Press 2003). Co-editor of Gendering the Nation: Canadian Women's Cinema (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1999). Editor of Equity and How to Get It (Toronto: Inanna Press, 1999). Author of articles on women filmmakers, feminist theory and Canadian cinema in books, film magazines and refereed journals.

Since 1983 she has been one of the senior international programmers of the Toronto International Film Festival. From 1991-1997 she was Vice-Chair of the Ontario Arts Council.

Between 1975 and 1987 she produced and directed documentary and experimental narrative films: Jill Johnston (1977); Gertrude & Alice in Passing (1978); Speak Body (1979); Bed and Sofa (1979); Striptease (1980); Storytelling (1983); Artist on Fire: The Work of Joyce Wieland (1987).

While still a graduate student in the English Department at U of T, Kay Armatage was one of the founding members of the collective which taught FSW 200Y, the first interdisciplinary women's studies course at U of T. She also taught one of the first courses in Cinema Studies and eventually combined both fields of interest in a course on Women in Film and Literature. After completing her Ph.D. (with a dissertation on Gertrude Stein) she taught full-time, cross-appointed to Women's Studies and Cinema Studies. From 1987-92 she chaired the Undergraduate Women's Studies Program and served as the founding Director of the Graduate Collaborative Program in Women's Studies from 1994-2000.
